Our Curriculum at Hemyock:

At Hemyock, we believe that strong early language development is the foundation for a child’s success throughout their education.

In our Star Class, we focus on building language skills through meaningful conversations and play. Each week, we introduce and explore the language for a specific concept, such as colour, number, size, family, shape, quantity, clothes, quality, space and position, time, food, and movement.

Our learning environment and planned activities are designed to give children plenty of opportunities to use these words and ideas in real-life contexts.

To make learning stick, we revisit previous concepts after four weeks. This approach is based on research showing that revisiting ideas after a short delay helps children remember and apply what they’ve learned.

At the end of each term, we celebrate together with special activities linked to events such as Christmas, Easter, and moving on celebrations.

Frequently asked questions:

Q. Who is Star Class run by?

A. The nursery class is part of Hemyock Primary School. The head teacher oversees the day to day running, supported by the KS1 Lead Teacher.

Q. Will my child be able to choose what to do?

A. Yes. There will be a variety of activities available every day and these activities are changed regularly in response to the needs and interests of the children.

Q. How will I know about my child's learning?

A. We use an online journal called ‘Tapestry’ to capture their experiences and share them with you. You can also add your own photos, notes and videos.

Q. What should my child wear?

A. Children attending Star Class are not required to follow our school uniform policy, but items are available to purchase from our uniform shop, if you wish to. There are daily messy play activities so please bare this in mind. They will need outdoor clothing and footwear, such as wellington boots.

Q. Can I claim funding for my 3-year-old child?

A. All children automatically receive 15 hours of funding in the term after they are 3 years old.
